What this rating actually means
Inspection ratings — KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi, SPEA in Sharjah — use a shared six-band scale: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak, and Very Weak. Each rating is the synthesis of dozens of judgements across student outcomes, teaching quality, curriculum design, pastoral care, leadership and governance. The headline grade you see in marketing is the lowest of the constituent grades — a school with Outstanding teaching but Acceptable leadership will be capped at Acceptable overall.

Read the report itself, not just the headline. The report tells you where the school excels and where it falls short. The headline tells you only the floor.

How to read between the lines of a report
Five sections of an inspection report repay close reading. Outcomes: what did students actually achieve, year on year? Teaching and assessment: is it consistently good, or just patchy? Leadership and governance: how stable is the team? Provision for inclusion: how genuine is the inclusive practice? The school's own self-evaluation: does the school know its own weaknesses, and are they acting on them?
A school that has identified its weaknesses honestly and has a credible plan to address them is in better shape than a school whose self-evaluation is glossy and disconnected from the inspector's findings.
Should you only consider Outstanding schools?
No. Outstanding-rated schools typically charge a premium for the rating. Plenty of Good and Very Good schools deliver better outcomes for specific child profiles at lower cost. The right question is not 'what is your rating?' but 'what is your rating, where did you drop marks, and what are you doing about it?'
An Acceptable-rated school can be the right choice if leadership is new, trajectory is upward, and your child fits the cohort. An Outstanding-rated school can be the wrong choice if leadership has turned over and the next inspection cycle is likely to demote it.

Where to find the original reports
KHDA publishes Dubai inspection reports on its website (khda.gov.ae). ADEK publishes Abu Dhabi reports on adek.gov.ae (under Inspection). SPEA publishes Sharjah reports on its own portal. Reports are typically available within 6-12 weeks of inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the highest-rated school overall?
There are multiple Outstanding-rated schools in the UAE. There is no official ranking within the Outstanding band, but parent reviews and university destinations help differentiate. Filter Schools Compared by 'Rating: Outstanding' for the live list.
How often are schools inspected?
KHDA, ADEK and SPEA typically inspect schools every 2-3 years. Schools at the lower end of the scale or with concerns raised may be inspected more often.
Can a school challenge its rating?
There is a formal moderation and appeals process at each regulator. Successful challenges are rare; the inspection methodology is robust and consistently applied.
Do ratings affect fee caps?
Yes. Each regulator publishes a fee-rise framework that ties the maximum permitted annual fee increase to the inspection grade. Schools that improve their rating can typically raise fees more than those that decline.
What does 'Very Good' mean in practice?
Very Good schools deliver consistently strong outcomes, professional teaching and sound leadership — but fall short of Outstanding on one or more dimensions. For most families, Very Good is a perfectly strong choice and often offers better value than Outstanding.
